Terrace Wall Complete

P1010978

The end of terrace wall is now complete and ready for soil and planting. I still have to complete the watercourse which will use the same green slate as the steps and the terrace paving itself.

The middle rank is probably going to become an artificial bog to accompany the cascade from the copper spout.

When the weather is better the pond will be cleaned out and replanted. it is currently seething with tadpoles.

Now for the exciting time planning the planting - looking to see if I can place   Gunnera killipiana  from local plant heroes ar Crûg Farm.

Gin, Talyot & Calas

P1010443

Our last walk on the island was a summation of earlier experiences.  From the village of St Louis - which was the French garrisom in the C18th  we visited another bronze age Talyotic remains, Trebauger.

Heading for the Camí de Cavills we went down a shorter more woody  a limestone gorge where a class of 6/7 year olds were making their own Taula. Cala Rafalet  was secluded (except for the pop-up clasroom)

The walk the carried along the limestone coast to Prima Punta - past another Martello tower to a Pomanda - the local gin and lemonade. Later this afternoon we walked to the Xorgier Gin distillery. Liqueurs are best remembered as holiday photos rather than something kept at the back of the cupboard.

Possibly the best beaches in Europe?

P1010441
We have been walking the Camí de Cavills - the Menorcan coastal path. Today we walked along the south western coast from Cala Galdana westwards.
The headlands are shaded by pine trees - the wild flowers in their perfusion. However the Calas en route are filled with white sand and bounded by honey coloured cliffs. The water gently shelves over the sand giving the most intense turquoise leading to the deepest blue.

Baranca de Binigaus

P1010370

We walked from Es Migjourn Gran down the Baranca de Binigaus to the sea and then along to Son Bou. This is a lush, verdant  limestone gorge. Flowers in abundance and more wild orchids than you could shake a stick at. Halfway down the gorge there is an enormous cavern, Cova de Collom.

P1010375
However the main joy of the walk was the profusion and variety of wild orchids -  of the pseudocopulation kind- designed by evolution to mimic insects:

Maó and the British

P1010349
Today's walk was around the inlet on which the city of Maó is built. There are substantial remains of the British occupation during the Napoleonic war. This Martello tower is like those found on the south coast of England or the one in Dun Loaghaire featured in Ulysses.

The deep harbour inlet in the soft limestone landscape makes a perfect harbour.

One district, now called Es Castell was formally Georgetown. It's central square is flanked by British Georgian period buildings

Most of the walking was over limestone headlands which had typical calcareous plants. The outcrops were covered with tufa like blocks with saxifrages and sedums.

First Snow

Y Wyddfa (Snowdon) from Tal Y Sarn

A lovely autumn morning with clear blue skies and a dusting of snow above 600m.
Today we had a  short walk through an industrial landscape: a circuit from Tal Y Sarn through Fron, Carmel and Cilgwyn.
P1010222

The old flooded quarries looked thier best with autumn colour - and the native Cotoneaster (Cambrensis?)  looked good. The light deteriorated later in the walk.

Y Lle Celf

The National Eisteddfod 2010 Y  Lle Celf ( The Art Place) was an installation in itslef.... as well as having good quality exhibits

P1010141

The site in Ebbw Vales was once a large steel works and an industrial basement was taken over to install the annual moveable art feast.

The ground floor.

Alas  on Saturday, the first day, the person empowered to label all the art works wasn't working. I enclose a selection of images.  My favourite was a sculpture based on aorta - a fine piece of sci-art

Other bits from the many works I liked.... the images will have to speak for themselves
